The Liberation of Distance Learning

Stay-at-home moms, full-time jobbers and senior citizens now have as fair of a chance at meeting their educational goals as those fresh-off-the-press, starry-eyed youngsters. More and more students are leaning on distance learning programs as a preferred alternative to the traditional classroom setting. Why might this be?

Flexibility
It’s pretty obvious that distance learning programs provide a lot more wiggle room than the confines of the classroom. Rather than struggle to snag a parking spot in fear of being towed or fined, fumble with faulty classroom equipment and flip through deteriorating text books in agony, wouldn’t it make more sense to eliminate these headaches altogether and opt for an education online? Let’s face it: Local and government funding for education is severely lacking these days, and students are seeing the effects of this firsthand. Distance learning practically eradicates the need for textbooks altogether thanks to virtual lesson plans and educational software. It also seems fitting that classroom attendance would rise within an online degree program, since “being late” is so easily avoidable: No more driving in circles around an over-stuffed, under-funded parking lot, counting down to class t ime. Instead, hop on that trusty PC of yours and sign into a session instantly (and it doesn’t matter whether you’re sitting at home in pajamas or hitting a coffee shop after a late work shift). Besides, you create your own schedule.
Learning Makes Sense
What’s so appealing about learning at your own pace? Well, many would argue that online degree programs enable you to slow it down or speed it up: Most like to speed it up by enrolling in fast-track degree programs. Who wouldn’t want to earn that degree faster, and ultimately, start profiting from their chosen career? You won’t be subjected to cackling ruckus-makers at the back of the classroom, nor will you snore as your instructor drones off on some irrelevant tangent. Time is money, and in a virtual classroom setting that time gets well spent. In fact, distance learning might provide more structure than you bargained for. Those motivated by deadlines are sure to succeed, since skipping out on studies will only fall on you.
No Boundaries
Geographical location can really hold people back, but the Internet fixes that. Enroll in certification programs, vocational programs, bachelors or associates degree programs, or online PhD programs: The sky’s the limit. Dying to attend Harvard? Brown and Princeton are the only two Ivy League universities that have failed to jump on the distance-learning bandwagon. If a peculiar degree program has ever peaked your interest but wasn’t offered at a school near you, it’s probably available online. Some interesting ones include the College of Culinary Arts Online at Le Cordon Bleu, as well as game design, media marketing and web design programs offered at Full Sail University.
